A Time of Transition

A Strategic Pivot Away from Russia

In 2018, Armenia underwent a peaceful "Velvet Revolution" which overthrew its Russian-aligned government in favor of a pro-Western, democratic administration. Since then, Armenia has been seeking new partners in the West to enhance its security and support its transition away from Russia’s sphere of influence. However, Russia has been actively working to thwart Armenia's Western pivot and restore its influence over the country, using Azerbaijan to launch military attacks and destabilize the pro-Western government.

Strengthening Regional Security in the Caucasus

Armenia’s pivot West represents a rare opportunity for the United States. Recognizing Armenia’s strategic location, particularly in relation to Russia's vulnerable southern flank, the U.S. has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to redesign the security architecture of the Caucasus and advance American national security interests in the broader region.
By fostering closer ties with Armenia, the United States can both undercut Russia’s position in the region and reduce America’s dependence on Turkey for access to the Caucasus and Middle East. Armenia is ready to partner with the United States and facilitate the long-term security of both nations.

Armenia’s pivot to the West represents a strategic opportunity for the U.S. to reset the geopolitical chess board in its favor.

Armenia is of vast strategic importance to Russia, which well understands that its southern underbelly consists of flat plains from the Caucasus to Moscow, and is its most vulnerable position in case of attack.  Removing or even neutralizing Armenia from its sphere of influence and bringing it into the West would be very costly to Russian interests, and very advantageous for the United States.

In 2018, Armenia threw out its pro-Russian government in favor of a Western-leaning one. It is actively discussing EU membership, and steadily severing ties with Russia in favor of the United States and Europe.

Unlike Ukraine, Armenia is not asking the U.S. for handouts. Rather, it is asking for the right to purchase American weapons to defend itself. Furthermore, the U.S. actually sends millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded aid to Azerbaijan every year.

All Armenia needs is a fair chance. Armenia needs America to stop enabling Azerbaijan.
Vivek Ramaswamy
Greater US-Armenian security cooperation, more active diplomatic mediation, and clear red lines against Baku, backed by the threat of sanctions, could buy the Armenians time and space to re-arm and restore a measure of balance in the dispute.
Sohrab Ahmari, Contributing Editor to The American Conservative
Unlike the 1915 genocide, this one is reversible. The U.S. government needs to organize and mobilize the global community to take action and to ensure the safe return of Armenians to Artsakh and to defend their right to self-determination.
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr
